Remote Wilderness Classics and Accessible Roadside Top Roping…

While the rock climbing in the Adirondacks is considered to be some of the best in the East, it’s the ice climbing here that truly shines! With numerous, excellent top roping sites as well as a multitude of roadside and wilderness classics, there simply isn’t a better place around to learn and practice this enjoyable craft.

Since 1988 Rock and River has introduced over 20,000 clients to the joy and beauty of ice climbing in this very special region. When choosing Rock and River, you’ll find:

  • Friendly, experienced guides, most having guided here for over 10 years and all sporting a perfect safety record,
  • A professional, customer-oriented business philosophy that puts the clients’ needs first,
  • A fair and affordable fee scale that allows access to professional instruction for families, groups and individuals,
  • People that care passionately about the region, their chosen profession and the clients they work with day after day…

All guiding originates from our lodge unless other arrangements have been made. Clients are asked to be at Rock and River by 8:30 a.m. If needed, we provide all the technical gear, including double plastic boots (the warmest boots available), crampons, ice tools, helmet, harness etc. We also provide lunches for all non-group sessions. We recommend dressing in layers including wool or synthetics, shelled gloves, wool socks, a wool hat and some form of an outer shell layer. We also recommend that people bring a large daypack, water bottle/thermos, ski goggles and camera if desired. Winter days can be cold so please prepare accordingly!

As with our Rock Climbing program, ice guiding/instruction will be offered entirely through Private Guiding and/or Group Instruction.

Groups and beginners would be wise to check out our Ice Park. It’s a fun, friendly, fantastic learning site available exclusively to our clients!
